Summer Research Scholars Award (SUMMERS)

The PIDS Summer Research Scholars Award (SUMMERS), established in 2021 through the PIDS Foundation and partially supported by a restricted educational grant from Sanofi, promotes careers in pediatric infectious diseases by funding summer research projects of students at various levels of training, from graduate/medical school to undergraduate.

The award is intended to support scholarship in pediatric infectious diseases broadly, including basic science, translational, clinical, epidemiology, and quality improvement research. Given the brevity of the summer research experience, focused studies or well-defined contributions to larger research projects will be most successful.

SUMMERS

• Open to graduate school/medical school students, undergraduate students pursuing medical or scientific research degrees
• Eligible research involving:
  • Basic science
  • Translational
  • Clinical
  • Epidemiology
  • Quality improvement
• A $3,000 stipend paid in two installments of $1,500
• Applicants must be sponsored and mentored by a PIDS member
• Application deadline 11:59 p.m. PT, March 25

The application is now closed. Applicants can expect to include the following materials for consideration:

1. Title page
   • Applicant Name
   • Project Title
   • Name of sponsoring PIDS member and affiliation
2. Brief overview of research project and planned experience (no more than 3 pages)
   • Specific project: Please address whether this is a new or existing project and what the student’s specific role will be
   • Pediatric ID Engagement: Will the student have opportunities to attend seminars, case conferences, and other pediatric ID learning events at the sponsoring hospital or institution?
3. Personal Statement (describing their interest in participating and career goals; no more than 1 page)
4. Mentor Letter of Support
5. Applicant’s CV or Resume
6. Mentor’s NIH Biosketch
