The PIDS Foundation offers an award in memory of Dr. Caroline B. Hall to celebrate her contributions to the field of pediatric infectious diseases through innovative clinical research. With a facility for language and a love of writing, Dr. Hall shared her research results and perspectives in many highly regarded published papers spanning forty years. Through these studies, she set the standard for clinical and translational research of pediatric infectious diseases, and will evermore serve as an inspiration to pediatricians and researchers across the globe.
The award will be presented annually by the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society to a junior investigator who is the first author of a paper that best illustrates Dr. Caroline B. Hall’s innovative approach to clinical research. Final selection of the award’s recipient will be made by the Board of Directors and announced at the PIDS Reception during IDWeek. The Pichichero Family Foundation and the PIDS Foundation seek to encourage increased innovative research to improve or develop new vaccines and immunotherapeutics for children.
Have you recently submitted an NIH or CDC award that just missed the payline? If so, the Pichichero Family Foundation Research Award in Pediatric Infectious Diseases may be a great way to build the additional data you need to launch a new area of investigation.
“Having been a grant-funded investigator for many years and serving on multiple study sections, I know firsthand how challenging the grant process is,” said Dr. Michael Pichichero, Director, Research Institute, Rochester General Hospital. The Pichichero Family Foundation seeks to stand in the gap that often exists between NIH paylines and good science that narrowly misses the mark by providing research grants to well deserving proposals. Beginning November 1, the PIDS Foundation will review repurposed NIH and CDC grants, with study section comments, on a rolling basis. Proposals that were reviewed favorably, but fell below the payline, will be eligible for funding.
“It is our hope that through the generous contributions of the Pichichero Family Foundation, we can help launch both young investigators’ careers and more seasoned investigators’ new areas of research,” said Dr. Buddy Creech, Chair of the PIDS Research Committee and President-Elect of PIDS.

The PIDS Young Investigator Award is presented to a physician who has completed pediatric infectious diseases fellowship training seven years or less from the award date and whose independent and productive research during and after fellowship represents outstanding contributions in pediatric infectious diseases.
